about

Presenting three of my most recent compositions, this CD was recorded in 2019 as a fourth-year BMus project at Carleton University.

This recording centers around my cello sonata "Escape," which I perform along with pianist Nicole Presentey. In its four movements, "Escape" travels through a sequence of related emotional states, with inspiration drawn from elements of my own experience with mental illness. From pensive lonesomeness to anxiety and desperation, the sonata finally closes with simpler textures that convey a sense of tranquility and peace.

The CD also includes my performances of two solo piano compositions: "Directions" and "Urban Movement." "Directions" is an exploration of motivic writing through varying moods and musical characters, while "Urban Movement" evokes scenes of a busy city through its driving rhythms and noisy ostinato patterns.

These three pieces are some of my most personal compositional work thus far, and I am very happy to have had the chance to record them this year and now release them to a wider audience.
